The representation of the foliage structure for the floating spheres experiments in the solar domain is to be done either in a deterministic manner (discrete case), that is, the location and orientation of every individual scatterer is known, or else, using a statistical approach where volumes with particular foliage properties are defined at specified locations within the scene. Within these volumes, scatterers can then either be finite-sized or else non-dimensional (turbid case).
In absence of any absolute reference truth the performance of RT models can be expressed in terms of their deviation from the mean of simulation results from all other models (Nc) that performed the same experiment. For any spectral (lambda), structural (zeta), illumination(Omega_i) and viewing (Omega_v) conditions one can thus compute the model-to-ensemble deviation of some model m (in [%]):
These delta_m values can then be obtained for a large set of simulation conditions and subsequently binned according to their values to generate a histogram of occurrences of delta_m values, that is, a histogram of typical differences from the ensemble mean.
